چکیده

Quantifying the spatial and temporal aspects of fish residency is needed to understand energy transfer, habitat function, contaminant exposure, effective design MPAs in estuarine systems. The movements 19 sea bream (Archosargus rhomboidalis), an ecologically important species mangrove estuaries western Atlantic, were investigated multiple bays on a Caribbean Island over two years using surgically implanted acoustic transmitters. Fish almost continuously monitored (residency index 96–100%) by array hydrophones during 11–13 month battery-life their Individual utilized small core areas (mean = 9.8 ha daytime 11.0 at night), displayed daily site fidelity 57% overlap day night area), showed no evidence ontogenetic increase size, many exhibited change winter months which coincident with suspected spawning. captured from same bay generally occupied spaces within study area, similar proportions, compared adjacent bays. different did not mix wander throughout ecosystem even though it all suitable used groups localized individuals. This similarity occupancy patterns limited scale scales weeks or months. When considered resolution individual receivers hourly time steps, most are close proximity one another for vast majority time. Although some pairs had as 84% detections after tagging, they gradually spent less near each other, overall pattern was consistent whole highlights importance examining time-intervals interactions.

Fatty acids in an estuarine mangrove ecosystem.

Fatty acids have been successfully used to trace the transfer of organic matter in coastal and estuarine food webs. To delineate these web connections, fatty acid profiles were analyzed in species of microbes (Azotobacter vinelandii, and Lactobacillus xylosus), prawns (Metapenaeus monoceros and Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and finfish (Mugil cephalus), that are associated with decomposing leaves ...

Influence of Mangrove Detritus in an Estuarine Ecosystem

This study has determined the relationship and extent of mangrove reduced carbon flow and its contribution to the diet of higher consumers in a nearby seagrass bed using stable isotope techniques. In a seagrass bed approximately 80 m from a riverine mangrove community, detritus from seagrass or other marine sources of carbon such as epiphytes (Stilophora rhizodes) or phytoplankton the major con...

flocculation of cu, mn, ni, pb, and zn during estuarine mixing (caspian sea)

during estuarine mixing of fresh water with saline water and due to the flocculation process, aportion of dissolved metals come into particulate phase, and the dissolved load decreases. this process plays an important role in self-purification of heavy metals in rivers. in this study, flocculation of cu, mn, ni, pb and zn during mixing of cheshme-kileh river water with caspian sea water has bee...

Sources of suspended organic matter and selective feeding by zooplankton in an estuarine mangrove ecosystem as traced by stable isotopes

Between January 1995 and August 1996, suspended matter and zooplankton were sampled at different locations in a mangrove ecosystem located in the Gautami Godavari estuary and adjacent Kakinada Bay (Andhra Pradesh, India). Suspended matter was sampled at 13 different stations, and was found to have a highly variable carbon stable isotope composition, with δ13C values ranging overall between –30....

Cloning of Interferon in Sea Bream (Sparus aurata): An Important Marker for Immune Response after Viral Infection

The interferons (IFNs) are soluble cytokines involved in the immune response against viral pathogens. In mammals, three families of IFNs have been identified (types I, II and III) and, recently, homologues of type I have been found in different fish species. In this paper we report the cloning of IFN genes from sea bream (Sparus aurata), expression analysis and gene structure. The sea bream IFN...
